He is old as the King James Bible, but he looks like a pop star. Age usually brings maturity. In Hook's case, he is basically a shrink in leather pants. He understands Emma – not just her personality, but her core. He sees right away that her tough exterior is just a front, a protective wall, and that she's afraid of trusting others.
But seeing her flaws doesn't make him run away.
But he doesn't want her to stay that way. He wants her to be healed, to slowly come out from under her rock and trust him. So he speaks truth into Emma's life and doesn't let her just run away from all of her fears.
And he's willing to wait. When Emma tells him that the price of being the savior is that she doesn't get a day off, he tells her gently that she has to start appreciating the good moments now or she'll miss them. But he also gives her space to process in her own time.
“I'm in this for the long haul.” - Hook
He supports her relationship with her parents, knowing that they will help bring her to a healthy place by loving her. He doesn't compete with them for Emma. He knows Emma needs both.
He's also willing, at one point, to let Neil and Emma have a shot at getting back together. This casts him into some depression, but he truly wants what's best for Emma more than what's best for himself.
“You traded your ship for me?” - Emma
Hook is old. He's been a pirate since his twenties and he's now around three hundred. Through everything, the one thing that's been a constant has been his ship. On it he lost Milah to the crocodile, his brother to the curse of Neverland, and his naive trust in the motives of the crown. It's the Tardis to the Doctor, Hogwarts to Harry, a castle to a king. Besides a person, it's certainly the thing he loved most in the world. And he was willing to give it up for the chance of finding Emma in New York and somehow bringing back her memories.
“A man unwilling to fight for what he wants deserves what he gets.” - Hook
Hook wants Emma and therefore expects to have to fight for her. He expects it to be hard and doesn't get lazy or afraid when it is.
I'm not condoning Hook's past. Hook doesn't either. “I'm a villain,” he says himself. When Emma met him, he was on a path toward revenge. But he's not anymore. He's willing to sacrifice everything – not just to be with Emma, but to save Emma from herself. He's trying to bring her walls down because he wants to help heal her.
And that is why Hook should be your Ideal Boyfriend Forever.
