"As reason clouds my eyes, with splendor fading,
illusions of the sunlight.
And the reflection of a lie will keep me waiting.
Love gone for so long."
- Trading Yesterday "Shattered"
Reason clouds my eyes.
That took a long time for me to catch.
Not everything true is reasonable. Turning water into wine is not reasonable. Walking on water, sending demons into pigs, coming to earth as a baby! Not reasonable. In one sense.
Writing a fantasy novel instead of going to college is not reasonable to many people (don't I know it). Skydiving isn't reasonable (sorry Toriel). Climbing Everest is not reasonable. Dreaming of your scribblings being a world-wide movie someday is certainly not reasonable.
That's why I'm glad Faith > Reason.
Joy > Reason.
Love > Reason.
That rush of breathless glory that Toriel described to me > Reason.
Hope > Reason.
Reason clouds many eyes.
But for the songwriter, it's splendor is fading. It's simply illusions of the sunlight. The real sunlight is faith.
But the reflection of a lie will keep me waiting.
The reflection of a lie, not even the lie itself, has kept the songwriter waiting. Could this be referring to people who discourage us? They are lied to by demons and they parrot lies to us. Sometimes we really do put down pens we need to use or lay aside drums that need to beat because someone lied to us. And it wasn't really from them, even. It was just the reflection of a lie.
I'm probably overthinking this. It's possibly just beautiful wording. But I love it so much I want to overthink it! :)
I love song lyrics that go deeper than the first hearing. That create both an atmosphere and individual insights.
Listen to the song and fall in love with it for yourself!
