The heart of this movie was that when you find your soulmate, you never give up fighting to be with them. That's sweet and whatever, but I don't believe in soulmates, so it fell flat to me. I mean, if you really believe in soulmates... what happens if you never find yours? Will you never find love? What if you find your soulmate after you're married to someone else? What about the many successful arranged marriages? I believe there are many people who are compatible with each person. Marriage is a matter of choosing one and sticking with it.
My personal favorite part of this movie was how the womanizer (Ryan Gosling) turned around after meeting Hannah (Emma Stone). He taught the main character, Cal (Steve Carell), how to be more of a ladies man, and in the end found himself wanting to be a loyal husband and father like Cal.
However, the 8th grade boy liking the babysitter who liked his married father was awful to watch. The movie all but advocated teen girls giving younger teen boys nude pictures of themselves.
This movie had too much raunch for me to recommend or to ever watch again, and the worst of the raunch wasn't even tied into the story, it was for it's own sake. I get really annoyed at that.
However, the climax scene where all the characters meet and discover the connections between each other was so funny. At one point all four guys are wrestling each other, each for different reasons. That scene was well written and well played. In a more powerful movie it would have stood out as a gem. I was also moved by the intimate picture of divorce and its impact on the entire family. But was it worth it? I want to be able to say yes, but no, not really.
