I have had a complaint (from the wonderful Toriel) that I seem too hard on this movie.
Good. Someone cares enough to really chat this up with me. Fantastic.
So, here are my replies to the comments she posted on my last post:
It's not that the ending (just cutting off) wasn't good, it just wasn't what I expected from Jackson.
I really, really think that the third movie is going to prove this a classic. It's sort of jarring to be thrust into so many intricate plotlines at once. But didn't The Lord of the Rings come across that way the first time anyone watched it? I'm betting on Jackson. This is going to be a fantastic trilogy. And I think it's a fantastic movie. I declared that right at the top so no one would have any doubts.
I loved Tauriel in general. Actually, she reminded me of my elf character Alassiel, which was a really strange thing to watch in-theatre. I was like - ohmycow - this is exactly what Alassiel would do. The whole going after someone who's not her race and healing him scene was so exactly Alassiel. Gave me so much hope and so many ideas for my own character.
I just love how human Tauriel is. Everything about her; how she stands, how she moves, how she speaks, screams how human she is, how different from the high elves in a very nuanced and fascinating way. I just adored seeing an elf like that. So different from Arwen or Galadriel. We didn't even know (cinematically) that this kind of elf existed! We thought all elves acted just like the royalty we'd seen.
Jackson said Beorn's coming back for the third movie! Did he look like you expected him to? Not to me! But the bear part was good, his house was good, I loved that they were so faithful to the book in those ways.
I'll call Kili a dork all I want! But I didn't say he wasn't a lovable dork.... :) I liked him best in the last movie. But I just felt it was a little cheesy. That's all. It's so not Aragorn and Arwen but it feels like it's kind of trying to be. And what does Tauriel see Kili do? What makes her attracted to him besides the way he looks? Tell me, I really want to know. I can't remember all of their scenes together.
Smaug was not what I expected! The dragon looked good, but he wasn't at all what I imagined. And the whole scene there went on for SO long - you have to admit it - running and running and Smaug talking and TALKING! I don't see any reason to be overly impressed. Not saying it wasn't good. Maybe 4.2 out of 5 stars. I only really rave about 6 star things. :)
I loved Smaug turning golden. I was like - what if he was encased in this gold and forever more the floor was made of gold and dragon? So crazy cool! And I did NOT want him to shake it off! Because I think that's one thing about Smaug. I pictured him kind of golden colored. NOT the gray-blue-flint he is. It's a dragon, and a big one, and an intelligent one, but it just isn't Smaug to me!
I thought the statue melting made a mediocre amount of sense. :) Not too bad. Very clever, you must admit.
Can. I. Rave. About. Bilbo.
He is so amazing! I think Martin Freeman does SUCH A FANTASTIC JOB with him! He is more Bilbo than I ever imagined Bilbo to be. And I LOVE this play of courage and nerves and the moments when he frightens himself and realizes he's not who he was before. He's grown into so much confidence. It's a delight to see Martin Freeman play with this character.
I LOVED the scene above the trees. And we all agreed that the spiders were intense and perfect.
So... why is Tauriel so close to the king and Legolas? Because she's a captain of the guard?
This movie was fantastic, fantastic, fantastic.
